Review: Saltwater Surf Travel – Maldives Magic on the Ari Queen I’ve just returned from my third trip with Saltwater Surf Travel, and once again, they’ve delivered an unforgettable 14-day surf adventure—this time aboard the Ari Queen, a beautifully set-up boat that comfortably berthed 10 of us mates for the ultimate Maldivian escape. From start to finish, the trip was nothing short of incredible. We explored a range of surf breaks, including some lesser-known, uncrowded gems that felt like they were ours alone. The conditions served up a dreamy mix of crystal-clear left-handers and playful rights, all framed by backdrops of stunning islands, turquoise lagoons, and overwater bungalows. At times, it felt like surfing in a postcard—except no one else was there to share the waves! Our surf guide Shabs was exceptional. Dialled into the local conditions, he always knew where to go and when, and his calm confidence made every session easy and safe. Our host Malcolm brought the laughs—funny, relaxed, and always making sure we were comfortable and well-fed (and maybe slightly over-fed!). Life on the Ari Queen was just as enjoyable as the time in the water. The air-conditioned cabins were clean and super comfy, and the covered bar area became our go-to hangout for watching sunsets with a drink in hand and a story or two rolling around. Between sessions, we had the chance to fish, explore remote islands, and even snorkel in some breathtaking spots. We caught fresh fish and there was never a shortage of food, laughs, or good times. The setup was seamless—our boards were transported by the dodie, and after a surf, we’d be picked up by a tender straight from the lineup. It felt effortless, allowing us to just focus on surfing, relaxing, and enjoying each other’s company. This trip was more than just surf—it was a reconnection with old friends, a celebration of good times, and a reminder of why we do these trips in the first place. Saltwater Surf Travel just gets it. They nail the balance of adventure, comfort, and mateship, and I’ll keep coming back for as long as I can stand on a board. Until I can’t surf anymore… this is the trip I’ll keep doing.
